Climate Action LAbis an educational organization that empowers Gen Z and millennials in Los Angeles to take climate action.

While I was the Graphic Design Intern for Climate Action LAb, I collaborated with the art director, writers, and researchers to create social media posts that turned complex environmental news into fun and digestible infographics.

What are Community Gardens? Roots, benefits, and how to get involved

Community gardens are collectively owned urban green spaces that play a vital role in sustainable living and cultural preservation. In these graphics, my goal was to shed light on their indigenous roots, significance in nurturing communities, and array of benefits. I sought to amplify their positive impact as hubs of shared values. To do this, I incorporated bug stickers as motifs to the designs and torn edges to evoke a scrapbook charm that adds a layer of positivity and playfulness.

What does tree equity in Los Angeles look like?

Tree equity is when trees are planted in every part of every city so that all communities can reap the benefits (breathing fresh air, drinking clean water, etc.). However, many low-income communities have less tree cover than the wealthiest ones.

To raise awareness on this issue, I created an Instagram post showing how tree equity in different L.A. neighborhoods compare, and how income and race plays a role in it. As of 2021, L.A. needs 5.1 million more trees to achieve tree equity. Additionally, low-income neighborhoods have 41% less trees than higher-income communities. Neighborhoods with majority people of color have about 33% less tree canopy than majority-white communities.

Breaking down Bitcoin’s environmental impact

Amidst the buzz around cryptocurrency in mid-2021, we wanted to create a post the breaks down Bitcoin’s environmental impact. I had little knowledge around Bitcoin, so I set out to translate the complexities of Bitcoin’s impact into comprehensible visuals.

The goal for this post was to inform and empower. Using a concise and scannable text format and custom illustrations that aligns with Climate Action LAb’s brand, I sought to bride the knowledge gap about Bitcoin’s consequences and encourage conversations about sustainable digital practices.
